A Room With A View…on the Danube

A room with a view…and what a view it was!  From the golden vineyards of the Wachau Valley to the twinking lights of Budapest, the view from every room on our river cruise ship was striking.  The great thing about a river cruise is that you have the best hotel in every city and village you visit…docking right in the heart of each town.  We sailed on the AMA Waterways “Legendary Danube” cruise this Autumn, departing from  Nuremburg, Germany and ending 7 days later in Budapest, Hungary.  Along the way, we ate the famous  liebkuchen (gingerbread) in Nuremburg, tasted amazing sausages and sauerkraut at Germany’s oldest sausage kitchen in Regensburg, hummed songs from the Sound of Music on our side trip to Salzburg, savored the wines of the Wachau Valley in Austria, stood in amazement on the deck of the ship as we passed the massive, towering Abbey of Durnstein, where Richard the Lionhearted was held captive, strolled the streets of Vienna at night, with its monuments and statues lit brightly, and looked down and across the Danube at the city of Pest from the heights of the Buda Fisherman’s Bastion.  In each city, you can walk almost anywhere you want to go and the ship carries bicycles, if you are so inclined to explore the towns this way.  We had beautiful gourmet meals on the ship with local wines personally selected by the owner of AMA Waterways.   This is a very intimate way to experience Europe and a great blend of having the ability to have a guided tour of each city and the option to explore on your own.  We give this trip 2 thumbs up.
